La Paloma Hunting
Deer
To bring the white tail deer to the utmost we have certain management
and trophy bucks that need to be harvested each year. These are the
deer that we would like to share with hunters that would like to visit
this scenic ranch in deep Southwest Texas.
Quail
Chaparrosa Ranch was lightly hunted during the 1999-2000 Quail season
for the first time in many years. For Southwest Texas Brush Country
we have many areas that with sandy soil, low brush and watering spots
that are appealing to the Bobwhite Quail and the Blue Quail - these
are all wild birds no pen release birds. We have special designed trucks
for quail hunting along with professional guides, bird dogs and retrievers.
Dove
Chaparrosa Ranch is located at the edge of farmland where small grains
and sesame is produced. The Mourning Doves come to the many tanks and
irrigation reservoirs located on the ranch.
Spring Turkey Hunts
In addition to the Chaparrosa Creek that runs through the ranch there
are the Turkey Creek and Seco Creek. With this abundance of oak trees
and other trees that are favorite roosting places for the turkey, there
are a substantial number of gobblers.
Fishing
In late spring we offer what could be called Family Retreats where you
would have the opportunity to fish the numerous stock tanks that frequent
the pastures of the Chaparrosa. We have boats that will be available
for your use. If you have non-fishermen in your family, they can enjoy
the pool and peace and quiet of the Lodge. For this first year we will
be operating under the "Catch and Release" policy but you can still
get your picture taken with it. This would be a good father/son or father/daughter
weekend in the cool of the fall or the spring.
Birding
This is an aspect of Chaparrosa that we hope to develop in 2001.
Monarch butterflies make Chaparrosa one of their rest stops, and Green
Jays are frequently sighted as well as Vermillion Flycatcher.
Check back frequently for the latest update on development of Birding!
Family/Friend Retreats
Our lodge has a large fireplace that can be enjoyed for a weekend
for a couple or a family (this may be after deer and quail season) and
there is a pool for the summer retreat with the family or friends. You
may enjoy the pool or fireplace, ride around the pastures or wet a fishing
line with the kids or the mate. Golfing is about 20 minutes away and
Eagle Pass and the border is about 40 minutes.
At a location about 3 miles from the main lodge we have 6 motel rooms
that are not quite as luxurious as the lodge. These rooms have two double
beds with access to a microwave and coffeepot. These rooms would be
ideal for the father/son hunt or father/son fishing trip. The rooms
could be used to catch the overflow from large family reunion or corporate
gathering. Close by this area is a firebox (Kiva) with brick patio and
outdoors cooking area.
